The Art of Awakening: A Conversation with Anay Ngawang Chodak

Artist Talk & Live Performance

Saturday, November 1, 3:00 to 6:00 PM

Crossing Art Gallery, Chelsea, NYC

Presented in partnership with The Tibet Fund

On November 1, 2025, Crossing Art Gallery welcomed a full audience for The Art of Awakening, a special program held in conjunction with Anay Ngawang Chodak’s solo exhibition Human Values That Transcend Time.

The event featured a thoughtful and engaging conversation between artist Anay Ngawang Chodak and Elena Pakhoutova, Senior Curator at the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art. Together, they explored how sacred Buddhist art and timeless philosophical teachings can be reinterpreted for modern audiences—preserving cultural legacy while speaking to universal human experiences such as compassion, interconnectedness, and inner human wisdom.

This dialogue offered a rare glimpse into Anay’s creative process, including his transition from traditional Buddhist art disciplines to contemporary abstraction. Guests were invited to consider how spiritual aesthetics evolve when expressed within new cultural contexts, particularly within today’s global art landscape.

The conversation was followed by a powerful live performance by Grammy-nominated Tibetan musician Tenzin Choegyal, whose music transformed the gallery into a space of cultural celebration and collective reflection.

The afternoon brought together artists, supporters of Tibetan culture, scholars, spiritual practitioners, and art enthusiasts—each contributing to a vibrant exchange about how Buddhist values continue to awaken deeper ways of seeing and living.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to The Tibet Fund for their generous partnership and to everyone who joined us for this meaningful gathering.

This exhibition was conceived, curated, and self-organized by Anay Ngawang Chodak and his management, and we are deeply thankful for the community that helped bring this vision to life.
